Photoshop – I used photoshop to make the front cover of my magazine, initially i started with my photo’s i had taken as the base for my magazine then using my knowledge of the cutting out tool i removed the grey back ground making it plain white, then feathering the outside of the image stopped it from being a harsh edge.

You can download tools onto the photoshop software witch allow you for different brushes and fonts, using these brushes i created different levels of texture and effects. Then adding new layers witch makes it easier to work with instead of doing it all on the background (original image) layer.

The contrast tool allows you to change the levels of tone and darkness in the picture, i used this to get my desired amount of light. Photoshop allows you to add in more images to one image, so i did just that and i have multiple images on the front of my magazine each with their individual border making them stand out from one another. Bright colours were used to emphasise headings and titles.

Indesign – This is a software that allows you to create leaflets, magazines, books and whatever you like with in depth publishing and editing. I have used in design to create the inner sections of my magazine (content page, Double page spread). You can add in text box’s witch then can be filled with a default text called a text filler. It enables your to import your photo’s from your albums so i saved my magazine cover as a PNG allowing me to import it into InDesign and putting it as a font cover was easy from then on.

Pages – Pages effectively is the Mac version of word, but it has a more creative side to it with a much more in depth perception on everything, it is alot easier to use because you are assisted by “inspector” witch helps you with layout, set-up, bullet points, margins and loads of other things. It allows your to stop things from being over lapped with this thing called the wrap tool.

Key Note – Keynote is a very professional version of powerpoint it allows you to make really good presentations at professional levels. It allows your to take a really boring presentation and turn it into something amazing, with keynote you can: Use interesting styles of backgrounds depending on the type or nature of your presentation, It also enables you to add charts and tables with ease, themes are also added in with no effort – this creates style in the presentation.

Another thing you can do with keynote is add media, such as music, videos and pictures. with keynote you also get an inspector to help you out if you ever get stuck, this allows you to change, group and format your prevention.

Leading

Leading is when hot metal type strips of lead were placed between lines of type to provide line spacing. Leading is the space between lines of type. It is generally measured from baseline to baseline and expressed in points. Some software may use the term line spacing while others still talk about spacing as leading. Word processing software often has the option to use single, double, or even triple spacing or to specify specific leading in points or other measurements. Programs that offer automated leading calculate what it believes to be the correct leading based on the text size. When a line of type includes more than one type size, this automatic leading can result in odd or inconsistent line spacing.

Orphans

In desktop publishing, widows and orphans are those words or short phrases at the end or beginning of paragraphs that are left to sit alone at the top or bottom of a column — separated from the rest of the paragraph.

History

The paper’s first issue was published on 7 March 1952 after the Musical Express and Accordion Weekly was purchased by London music promoter Maurice Kinn, and relaunched as the New Musical Express. It was initially published in a non-glossy tabloid format on standard newsprint. On 14 November 1952, taking its cue from the U.S. magazine Billboard, it created the first UK singles charts. The first of these were, in contrast to more recent charts, a top twelve sourced by the magazine itself from sales in regional stores around the UK. The first number one was “Here in my heart” by Al Martino. This then ran onto the 1960s, During the 1960s the paper championed the new British groups emerging at the time. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were frequently featured on the front cover of NME. These and other artists also appeared at the NME Poll Winners Concert, an awards event that featured artists voted as most popular by the paper’s readers. The concert also featured an awards ceremony where the poll winners would collect their awards. The NME Poll Winners Concerts took place between 1960 and 1966. They were filmed, edited and then transmitted on British television a few weeks after they had taken place.

The latter part of the 1960s saw the paper chart the rise of psychedelia and the continued dominance of British groups of that time period. During this era some sections of pop music began to be designated as Rock. The paper became engaged in a sometimes tense rivalry with its fellow weekly music paper Melody Maker; however, NME sales were healthy with the paper selling as many as 200,000 issues per week, making it one of the UK’s biggest sellers.

NME.com

In 1996 under the stewardship of NME editor Steve Sutherland and then NME publisher Robert Tame, the NME started its website NME.com. Its first editor was Brendan Fitzgerald. Later Anthony Thornton redesigned the site, focusing on music news. The website was awarded Online Magazine of the Year in 1999 and 2001; Anthony Thornton was awarded Website Editor of the Year on three occasions – 2001 and 2002.In 2004, Ben Perreau  joined NME.COM as the website’s third editor. He relaunched and redeveloped the title in September 2005 and the focus was migrated towards video, audio and the wider music community. It was awarded ‘Best Music Website’ at the record of the day awards in October 2005. In 2006 NME.COM celebrated with a party at London’s KOKO featuring Leicester band Kasabian and was subsequently awarded the BT Digital Music Award for Best Music Magazine and the first ‘Chairman’s Award’ from the Association of Online Publishers awarded by the Chairman, Simon Waldman in recognition of its pioneering role in its ten-year history.
