How far does the representation of a particular social group change over time? Refer to at least two media in your answer.

The particular social group i choose to talks bout is women. The women changed quite allot with the years in the film industry. As in the way they speak, the way they act an how people look at them in general. Women in the films evolved from house wife’s and servants to sex objects and even main characters in some films.

If you take a look at the older films like ‘The Matter of Life and Death’ the women in there are usually house wife’s,waiters, or someone that is loved by the main character. Women didn’t get to play  any major roles or have any strong influence or on their surrounding world as back then, middle ages white men were the stereo typical men who had it all and were like the ‘Boss’.

We have kept the film elements of the traditional thriller genre. We used  element surprise for example we give a quick hint at

what is going to happen but not quite revealing what actually will happen,  making the audience to ask many questions.

The point of that is to intrigue and tense the audience and keep them interested in the film. We kept the traditional elements of a thriller as we

thought that it would work quite well as it has done so for many years. We based our film on sci-fi thriller called C.S.I with the murder sequence

at the start to keep the audience interested.

We shown and used some of our film elements to make the representation of social groups for example,  the killer who appeared briefly at the start of the film  was wearing

gloves as most killers do for the simple fact of covering their fingerprints. We also kept covering him in  shadows and revealing as little information about

him/her as possible so the audience is kept in the intrigue. Also we shown the other side of social group, the detective who was wearing a suit with dark shades

and a flashy car with a police badge (this element made it clear that he is from higher authority not just random man in a suit ).So by showing our representation of two social

groups we tried to make it clear for the audience so there is less confusion. We found more about these social groups by watching some films to

make it more clear as a mentioned before ‘C.S.I’ and ‘Seven’ where the detectives tend to wear nice suits and the murders or the bad guys covered up.

To distribute/advertise my film i would personally use quite famous internet browsers like Google and Youtube as both of them are quite popular worldwide but that

would only cover the internet side. Advertisement in the cinemas for the new release and the daily commercials on  the TV which might take allot of budget but would make the film

more popular and would get previewed by many people that way, which will give a curtain influence as the more people see it the more catchy it gets. The show would be put on TV on channel 3 (ITV) at 21:00 o’clock because this channel is more popular, which was researched by questionnaires and graph results displayed below the text. . The target audience would be people from 16 years old and up. That is because some of the scenes in the film are not for child viewing and might disturb their mental health as in when they get older.

As  the film has got a particular mind wrapping set-up as most of the thrillers have any younger age might not understand the gist of it and not understand some elements of the movie.

As I done some media film production before I did not acquire a lot of knowledge about the technologies that were used I feel that I learned more about trying to produce the film it self,as .I already knew

how does a camera work and the software that we used which was apple mac Movie maker but I did find lot of new neat tricks and some interesting discoveries. I learned that the lighting has a huge influence representing

the character to the audience then I ever thought, as with the light and the darkness, and which character needs a specifying lighting. For example the killer was hidden in the shadows for the most of the time which was tricky to accomplish with the materials we had which were house based only. We used Film noir techniques in our TV show to have greater influence on the audience as it was used in The Maltese Falcon and The third Man.The high key lighting helped to show the murder and other characters in their own light to support representation of the character.

The camera angling was quite difficult to get perfect too as the scenes were house based again and not professionally set up scene like in the high budgeted films.  We used quite a few mid shots while we were indoors. There weren’t many close-ups except the victim in the moment of when he was scared and keeping the tension. Most of the shots were long shots and point of view as that keeps the tension and brings then audience more into the plot of the story.

We had very narrow corners to place the camera into and it was difficult to get a good shot so the camera had to be handheld for some scenes where a tripod shot would of worked better as it was meant to be a steady shot for a close up

on the victims face for example. The detail we had to pay attention was far greater then just making a trailer. As whenever you cut a shot you need to make sure that the following shot flows with the previous one.We used continuity trough out the thriller and made sure that everyone wore and had the same props. Also when it cane to camera positioning we had to rearrange the camera from different angles,as we had one camera the actors had to restart from same position the previous shot cut out  .That was quite hard to accomplish on the car scene as it was not in a controlled environment we had to re-film the same shot quite a few times to make it right and edit it in the end to make it flow as the main character footwork was not exactly right. We did match editing to make sure  that it worked. So it didn’t look that it was done in different time so it all synchronised.

In the middle of making the movie me and my partner found out that a new Movie Maker software came

out and we explored that too . The new software had easier usage so I got familiar with that software too and it seemed more efficient in actual editing wise

to edit the shots then the previous one. It would of been quite handy if we had fully switched to it from the begging of the making the film as we could of tweaked and played around with the timeline more.

I think in as a whole, I learned allot for the fact that it was not so easy to make for a start as limited budget and crew was making quite hard to make the movie. I learned more about camera positioning how to get a better angle and how to try and make

the characters in the film give a certain influence on the audience so I represent the character the way I want him to be seen and that was helped to accomplish with camera work, lighting and music like a theme tune for a certain character like bad guys, good guys

,victim and as a whole I learned a lot about representation.

The thriller we made I think is quite successful as we managed to fit in the main thriller elements like the element of surprise, confusion and the audience asking questions. As the element of surprise and confusion come in under the asking question titles I think it was achieved quite well. As our opening sequence of our thriller managed to make the audience to ask quite a few questions like who is watching the film, why does he get killed, who kills him and so on.

The thriller could of been improved though by a higher budget as we lacked some sounds effects that were unavailable to us as due the low budget we had. The sound in our thriller had a major impact on the audience as it helps the audience to get there faster like when you have a particular theme tune on a character it helps them to get it in the right mood as for if its the killer and he/she has got the theme tune that means whenever the audience hears that, they know trouble is coming and the audience becomes more tensed. Due the lack of the sound effects we had we had to work with what we had by digging up our personal libraries and even recording some of them like the car door slam. The sound that could of had a major impact on the thriller we could not get a hold of was the footsteps as it would of had a crucial impact on the audience because it would of kept the tension and help it to build up when the killer approaches the victim. Also the footsteps for the main character as he walks out of the car and walks towards the house the footsteps might of had a particularly good impact as it would of gave the slow motion hero walk. We had mostly diegetic sound in the thriller but few parts were non-diegetic like the crows in the background when the detective was walking down to the house. Music that was playing trough the thriller was also all non-diegetic to help regulate the audience and how they feel trough out the thriller. Mostly all the music playing was non-synchronous but it was there to give the right mood. The synchronous sounds were like the door slams, crows and the foot steps which would off been added if our budget allowed it.  Some of the scenes would of worked a lot better if we had a higher quality cameras and professional lighting scenes to make a special impact on the audience but as we didn’t we improvised and worked with home based materials.

In S by SE the narrative theory that applied was mainly Todorovs theory which is the basic structure for all narratives. He said that film programmes begin with an equilibrium, calm period. Which happened in S by SE as everything started off quite calmly with no fuss and then all off a sudden you have a murder by the murder which is an agent of disruption. Agents of disruption cause disequilibrium which is a period of unsettlement and disquiet.  This is the simplest form of narrative sometimes referred to as ‘Classic’ or Hollywood’ narrative. There are few more narrative theory’s like Propps theory which was researched based on Russian fairy tales. He made clear that there only 8 different character types and only 31 things they ever do. Each character has usually a sphere of action. Propps theory is easily relatable to films and programmes nowadays. Levi-Strauss’ Binary opposition says that narrative tension and based on conflict. This can be as simple as two characters fighting for example, like indians and cowboys in the western movies ,black or white, good or evil, and so on. We have used this in Film noir way by using the shadows and lighting, as in we displayed the detective in light environment and the murder in creepy shadows and darkness.
