In this years project, i chose to make a music video for my advanced media portfolio. It was quite different from last years work as last year i had to produce four min intro to a film.
With the making of the music video it was rather different. Because the basics of making these two are very different from one another. By the research that i did earlier by analysing few music videos. Which all came became part of my planning. I watched some other A level music videos produced by other students, and also some professionally made videos with detailed analysis. The detailed analysis gave me more of an idea what a music video involves and what I’d have to include in mine as well. In our music video we tried to use some special effects similar to some other music videos that we looked at before. Like the time lapse that represented time going by quickly as the main guy thinks about what he’s done which the song is all about.
We tried to follow the following steps of addressing every aspect of the basic media which are Sound,SFX,Editing, Mise on scene and camera movement/angles. The sound was all non diagetic as its a music video so we had to synchronise the song with the video it self, as we actually to begin with had 2 series of videos. We filmed the main story line scenes which included all about the main guy killing the girl and regretting it as the song is about ‘What I’ve done’. The other piece of the video was the band scenes, which mainly were filmed in one location with different cameras in different angles simultaneously. We did it this way because we noticed that in most music videos its a common trait to make the band scenes more interesting and to do so SFX and editing might not be enough, so we decided to have more material to work with we had two cameras going at the same time with different angles. When it came to editing it paid off as we used both camera shots in the production of the video. We tried to be creative with our camera work in the band scenes and the story line scenes. We used hand held and tripod shots and even few attempts at crane shots, which unfortunately were mostly hand held due the lack of resources. Even though our resources weren’t great we still could be imaginative and we did our best at it for example like the ending shot when you see the camera go up as the suicide was committed and he shot himself, that was filmed hand held and edited on the iMovie to make it seem more like a human being killed/suicide.
We used the basic narrative theory in this music video, which was Todorov’s theory. We had a reversed linear narrative structure so therefore we had the disequilibrium come first and following it was the equilibrium, but also on the other side there were many questions that the music video made the audience to ask. So i came to a conclusion that there was some Barthes enigma code involved as there were mysteries in the music video and some of them are quite hard to figure our if you watch it just once.
The Mise on Scene did include some similarities to the video i analyzed. Constant selection of clothing on the main actor as the scenes were filmed at different times and we had to make sure that everything looked as natural and unsuspicious as possible, the continuity had to be kept. When it came to the band scenes we had every band member with their own props as for example drum set, amps, guitars, microphone’s. We didn’t have a dress code for the band scenes as we wanted to keep everything alternative. We also had an idea, to have the lead singer disappear when he gets killed in the story lines. As it is the same person in story lines and the lead singer is the same person.
My video and the magazine cover, magazine ad go well together. I match up the fonts between all of them to give the band sort of a theme for them selves. Which I think I succeeded in as i used iconography to make sure that it is sort of the same . The CD cover and the magazine ad can be recognized by,fonts, icons and logos that they have in common. The magazine and the ad, give an effect of rock/metal to the audience , i did my own research to that, and found out that most common trade colour in this music style is black. So i have included that color as one of my theme colors with and i think it attracts and underlines the bands name to stand out and be picked by the audience.
The audience feedback stated that majority people questioned prefer alternative/metal style music more then others so this was why i choose alternative/metal. The research wasn’t completely accurate as we didn’t have much resources and many
people to question so this was as many as we could do.
I used various technologies and programmes in production of my project. The research was conducted mainly via internet, which included watching videos and reading up on how does a music video work and what kind of genres there are. I also looked through some magazines for examples of my magazine advertisment. So i know what my advertisment should look like. In research and production I used few more software’s like Pages and Photoshop. Photoshop was mainly used to work with putting my CD cover together. The images on it have been edited and created on Photoshop but it was put together on Pages.
In the video development I used iMovie to put the video together and do all the editing on sound,SFX and all the cropping on the shots. The film was filmed with digital cameras and we took some pictures of different areas for filming research so we know where and what we have to work with. All the information was stored on the iMac and the internet via Bloging system set up in school.
The websites i used for research were www.wikipedia.com, www.google.com, www.youtube.com these are the main websites were used for making this project also i had a few browses on some band websites like ‘Linkin Park” and “Green Day”.

In the evaluation the following questions must be answered:
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
Ideas for the format for the presentation of the evaluation can be found in the Guidance Notes.

-CD/DVD Cover
1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together
with two of the following three options:
a website homepage for the band;
a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);
a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).
Lyrics of the Song.
In this farewell
There’s no blood
There’s no alibi
‘Cause I’ve drawn regret
From the truth
Of a thousand lies
So let mercy come
And wash away
What I’ve done
I’ll face myself
To cross out what I’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what I’ve done
Put to rest
What you thought of me
While I clean this slate
With the hands of uncertainty
For what I’ve done
I start again
And whatever pain may come
Today this ends
I’m forgiving what I’ve done!!!
What I’ve done
Forgiving what I’ve done
Our Story behind the song.
A killer kidnaps a female and is ordered to kill her,he hasn’t ever killed a female before so its a hard job.
He kills her and then his conciseness kicks in and he decides to give him self up to the police. He walks and thinks about it.
He walks over to the graveyard to the girls grave but cant find it, as the time goes past and he stares in to the distance he makes a decision.
He can’t force himself to go in. Then his final resolution is to end his own life and so he does.
Extras:
The person who is the killer is the main person who is in the band and who is the lead singer, the song originally we intended for the lead singer to disappear when the main guy kills him self in the story lines and we would have his hat drop down in slow motion for a great effect on the audience so they know its the same person.Due some difficulties with the equipment we weren’t able to shot this scene.

Video Analysis of Velvet Revolver-Come on ,Come in -3:55
Band Members:
Slash
Duff McKagan
Matt Sorum
Dave Kushner
Scott Weiland
“Come On, Come In” is a song by American hard rock band Velvet Revolver, featured on the soundtrack to the 2005 super-hero film Fantastic Four. When released as a promotional single in the United States on June 21, 2005,the song reached number 14 on the American Billboard Hot mainstream rock chart. The lyrics were written by vocalist Scott Weiland and the music was written by Weiland and the rest of the band, the song was produced by the band, Douglas Grean and Nick Raskilinecz. The music video for “Come On, Come In” was directed by Wayne Isham.
Sound-The sound is mainly the singer singing and the music played through the whole video. There are slight additions in the sound at the begining of the video to start it off nice and steady and then it is being released to the audience. When the sequence switches to the film the song is non-diagetic and also when the camera switches between the individuals in the band and you can’t see where the rest of the of the music is coming from.
SFX- The video starts off with a zoom in on amplifier wires that gives a calm and a steady start off, ideal for this song. Later on in the song the amplifiers are used once again as it is trying to send out a message “the song is of this comic world and this comic world comes from the music that they play”. The whole video is based on the film Fantastic Four and as it was originally a Marvel comic and the video producers have cleverly used that to make the video in a comic super-hero/villain style. They have the background of the band changing quite often, depending on the words of the song. It changes like a theme, also when its showing solos of any of the band members, like for example Slash at 2:36 into the video, he has his own background which changes according to the sequences of the film. The changes involve the sky, band members positioning even the city around them disappears in an instant and reappears when the pace of the song changes.
We used a lot of SFX in our video making, to give a good impression on the audience but at the same time we made it understandable so they can follow the basis of the story line.
Editing- There is a lot of editing made in this video as this video is based on a film. They have included quite a few film sequences from the film and the lyrics are mainly related to the film as well. The cutting from the band to the film and between all of the band member is been made quite quick and flashy to make a certain effect on the audience to give the super-hero/villain presence. The video has small clever edits as in when it shows ‘The Things’ transformation as the guy who was transforming was bald it switches to one of the band members which also is bald so the video is like comparing the singer to the character from the film.
In our music video ‘What I’ve done” we also had a story line something like a mini film going in the background of the band scenes.
Mise on scene- Not a lot of props were used in this music video. All of the band individuals had their own kit as in their own amps, drums, guitars. The only person who changed prop wise was the leader singer. During the video he changes his clothes several times for changes of pace in the song. Also more famous performers such as ‘Slash’ is wearing his usual hat and shades with a big afro which allows you to recognise him very easily.
In the music video we made, we used mise on scene as well as this video has, every band member had their own equipment to show their independence.
Camera- The camera movement involved a lot of low angle shots which helps to represent the singers and their influence or something like their power during the music video. There are many close ups present of the lead singer and the individual members of the band and also of their instruments like guitars, drums, amplifiers and their tattoos. The cameras pan in front of the band also as making the crane shots too,so literally the camera is all over the place to give the effect of no stability which means something paranormal is happening like the super-hero stuff. Which is helped with slow/fast zoom outs and zoom in’s in the crucial moments which allows the sequences between he band and the flow smoother. Some shots are frozen for a split second so that the audience get a certain impression and has a longer glance at the moment as it has a meaning behind it.
This analysis had a significant effect on our video. As i took examples of what was used in the video ‘Come On, Come In’. They used a lot of angle shots, which we replicated as well , to give greater view and impression to the audience.
